The daughter of ex- South African President Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked allegations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over statements she published on digital networks four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.

A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and arson, resulted in at least three hundred deceased and resulted in damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

She has been charged of fuelling this violence and confronts accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were focused in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the former president's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has consistently rejected the accusations against her, with her legal representative previously describing the prosecution's legal argument as weak.

She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her parent after he established his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.

Backing and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his relatives.

A few of followers from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and lacks substantial proof for a conviction.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital comments from 2019 form the foundation of the prosecution's argument
  • Deadly unrest in July 2021 resulted in substantial casualties and monetary destruction
  • The accused confronts multiple allegations of incitement to violence
  • Court trials are expected to continue for multiple days

The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a carefully observed legal battle with significant politically charged consequences for South Africa.
