Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
