Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.

This Academy Award-nominated performer Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.

The actor, whose roles featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. This announcement was shared through a message shared by her child, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.

Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films like Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my wonderful hero and my precious gift being my mom”, stating that she was at her bedside as she died.

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist along with empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she expressed. “We were fortunate to know her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Ladd’s early career featured supporting roles in TV shows such as Perry Mason whereas the seventies featured her performing next to actor Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

That very year, the year 1974, she shared the screen with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s celebrated dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting earned Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller the movie Black Widow as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining the sitcom Alice, a sitcom derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she was given another best supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the parent of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. The next year she received another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Dern.

“This was the picture that Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought us to England for a special screening and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, with John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as the mother of Dern another time. The decade also brought her TV award nominations for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Working with Laura Dern

She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and Mike White’s comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She also appeared next to actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Ladd also wrote and directed the comedy the movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Family Ties

She was additionally the third cousin of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a major inspiration on my life”.

Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with lung disease and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery when her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and not let it back up like a sore or something, instead apply it to discover, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
