Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

In late December, Williams married Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
